Pour some out for the ones that got away

Some ideas are too ahead of their time. Or didn’t survive a change in strategy. But they were still good ideas. Everyone has some. These are mine.

Three stoners, one TV

Think back to the mid-2010s. A time before Snoop hosted the Olympics and showed up on every spot. Before the Jeff Bridges Renaissance. Before Willy Nelson hawked BIC lighters and Sketchers. Back in those days, I had a Super Bowl spot idea for LG’s MicroThin TVs (or whatever they were called) where those three gentlemen happened to be at the same watch party, getting lost in the vibes of this skinny LCD. We pitched this to LG, but unfortunately they decided not to do a Super Bowl spot, and the idea got shelved.

Local Beer Done Good

Old Style Beer is a northside Chicago classic, the beer that accompanies every memory of the sports team and people in the surrounding neighborhood. Old Style signs used to hang on every corner, welcoming in the hard-working locals to blow off steam and end their day right. So my copywriter John Cockrell and I had this newbiz concept of The Corner Beer, playing on the aesthetic of DIY ‘zines and stapled-up posters on every corner pole. We won the business actually, but it was resigned before we started, so we could pitch a MegaBrew launching an energy drink(!!). I always felt we could have made some fun, authentic work for a beloved local brand.
